这 里 分 析 一 个 很 容 易 让 人 迷 糊 的 问 题 ， 就 是 “the most
famous……”指的是“最有名的……”，既然是“最”，那么就具备唯一
性，只能是一个。比如“最高的山”、“最长的河”等等，可为什么还
可以在这个词组前面添加“one of”也就是“之一”的说法呢？“之
一”和“最”是否前后矛盾呢？
其实这是正确的，并不矛盾。
因为“one of the most famous…”是一个相对性的表达方式，它表
示某个事物在某个方面非常出名，但并不排除存在其他同样出名的事
物。因为人们的价值观和标准是不同的，不同的人对于“最有名的”、
“最好的”等评价标准的看法也可能不同。所以，可以认为 1000 个人
心中就可能有 1000 个不同“最有名的……”，用“one of”只是来表达
其中的一个。
还有一种理解方式是这样的。例如，如果我们说 “这是我读过的最
好的书”，那么这本书就是绝对最好的，没有其他任何一本书能够超越
它；但如果我们说 “这是我读过的最好的书之一”，那么这本书是在同类
书中处于非常优秀的位置，但并不排除存在其他同样优秀或者更优秀的
书。

另一个例子，如果我们说 “这是我见过的最聪明的人”，那么这个人
就是绝对最聪明的，没有其他任何一个人能够超越他；但如果我们说 “
他是我见过的最聪明的人之一”，那么这个人是在同类人中处于非常聪
明的位置，但并不排除存在其他同样聪明或者更聪明的人。
因此，“the most” 和 “one of the most” 的区别在于是否强
调了相对性和绝对性。如果要强调绝对最高水平，通常使用“the
most”，如果要表达相对水平，通常使用“one of the most”。
